Q. How does Microsoft Windows 95 recognize the AMD K6?

A. The original release of Windows 95 misidentifies the AMD K6 processor because of the fact it doesn't have the K6 within it's internal tables. Windows 95 thinks that the K6 is a Pentium. This occurs because Windows 95 was released before the K6 was available.

The AMD K6 processor will exhibit no performance loss, however, because of this misidentification. This misrepresentation will also not render any software unusable. The AMD K6 is certified by Microsoft for Windows 95.

The Microsoft® OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) fixes this problem and properly recognizes the AMD-K6 as AuthenticAMD under System Properties?

Q. Is the AMD K6 compatible with my favorite hardware and software applications?

A. Absolutely. The AMD-K6 is compatible with the installed base of x86 hardware and software, as well as all major operating environments, including Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 3.x, MS-DOS, OS/2, Novell NetWare, Unix, and Linux. The K6 is also compatible with applications implementing industry-standard MMX instructions.

Unlike the 6x86MX, the AMD K6 is compatible with the AWE64 WaveSynth/WG software. Don't hesitate to buy this card if you are a K6 owner, but I still prefer MaxiSound from Guillermot.

The MaxiSound delivers 64-voices produced by hardware, not 32 voices from hardware and 32 from software like the AWE64 cards. Check out the following MaxiSound review from Gamecenter.com. I think that you will be impressed. All of the feedback that I have received about this card has been very positive.

Also unlike the 6x86MX, K6 users don't have to worry about using a CPU Identifier to trick Windows 95 or hunting down game patches because a programmer didn't think that people used processors that were not Intel.
