available.CPU Detectors
ibmm1.exe (170KB) - A
utility supplied by IBM that allows you to identify the revision of a 6x86 processor. This
prevents you from having to pull the chip to read the lot code. Read here for instructions.
whatcpu.zip - A cpu/cache detector
available from DataExpo that stays up-to-date You must register with DataExpo to receive
the application.
Linux
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/hardware
- By request for all of you Linux users. Here is a site that offers many utilities for
Linux and the 6x86.
Optimizers
m1opt.exe (17KB) - A
utility supplied by IBM that is suppose to optimally set internal 6x86 registers for high
performance. I have not used this utility and I am not familiar with its results.
m2opt.exe (19KB) - A
utility supplied by IBM that sets the bios for safe 6x86MX performance if your motherboard
doesn't offer 6x86MX support.
6xopt078.zip (101KB) - An excellent 6x86 optimizer written by Mikael Johansson.
It goes in and changes certain cpu registers to increase overall performance.
6x86cfg3tl.exe - A 6x86 optimizer written
by Olivier Gilloire that optimizes your 6x86 and makes Windows 95 and other programs think
your 6x86 is a Pentium processor. This optimizer is different from other 6x86 optimizers
because it can be controlled through a GUI instead of a command prompt.
setup.exe (510KB) - A
6x86MX control panel from Powerleap that optimizes your K6 and 6x86MX
control registers for best performance via a GUI. This utility also allows custom
register settings, supports Windows 95 and Windows NT, and displays CPU manufacturer,
type, model, stepping, speed, core/bus ratio, bus speed, L1 cache size, RAM size, and
presence of MMX extensions. Recommended for power users only.
OS/2
set6x86.zip (79KB) -
Greg Kondrasuk's port of Koen Gadeyne's set6x86 v1.3 for Linux/DOS to OS/2. This is the
first 6x86 optimizer/utility that I have found for OS/2. I know that all of you OS/2 users
have been screaming for one.
Utilities
puzzle.exe (14KB) - A
small benchmark utility supplied by IBM that can be used to benchmark your system to see
if any of the optimization programs are beneficial.
pipeloop.exe (4KB) -
Both 3D Studio and Clipper Applications use software timing loops in the code. The 6x86
processor executes these loop instructions faster than previous x86 cpus which interferes
with timing dependent code in both software programs. This utility inserts a delay in the
loop instruction.
6x86ctl1.zip (14KB) - A utility written by Ray Tassle which allows you to
change/view 6x86 cpu configuration option bit settings.
m1.exe (102KB) - The true
Cyrix 6x86 register manipulation utility.
ibmm2.exe (194KB) - The
true IBM 6x86MX register manipulation utility.
cx_test.exe (80KB) - A
utility which tells you if your BIOS programs the 6x86 register set correctly.
Windows 95
686_p.exe (3KB) - A utility
that tricks Windows 95 into thinking that it is running on a Pentium for games that think
the 6x86 is a 486. Read here for
instructions.
6xopt078.zip (101KB) - A CPU ID program written by Mikael Johansson. It
allows Windows 95 to see the 6x86 in the control panel under system as a Pentium.
6x86cfg3tl.exe - A 6x86 optimizer written by
Olivier Gilloire that includes a CPU ID program to make Windows 95 and other programs
think your 6x86 is a Pentium processor.
Windows NT 4.0
nt406x86.zip (76KB) - A
software fix to remedy the Windows NT 4.0 performance problem found in 6x86s that are
pre-revision 2.7. This utility manipulates the internal registers of the 6x86 to change
the internal cache operating mode back to write-back. Cyrix or IBM did not write this.
Read here for more information.
nt40read.txt - Installation
instructions for the nt406x86.zip utility.
directnt.exe (120KB) -
Another unofficial patch available that will change the internal cache operating mode to
writeback on a 6x86 processor under Windows NT 4.0. It was written by the German hardware
magazine c't. A readme file is included. Ken Barbalacem also added a batch file to be used
with this application which automates the installation.
reactive.exe (174KB) -
Another derivative of direcnt.exe which includes a much more constituted installation
routine. No modifications have been made to the original code.
6x86cfg3tl.exe - A utility written by
Olivier Gilloire that optimizes your 6x86 processor under Windows NT 4.0 Workstation or
Server through a control panel and a service.
setup.exe (510KB) - A
6x86MX control panel from Powerleap that optimizes your 6x86MX control registers for best
performance via a GUI. This utility also allows custom register settings, supports
Windows 95 and Windows NT, and displays CPU manufacturer, type, model, stepping, speed,
core/bus ratio, bus speed, L1 cache size, RAM size, and presence of MMX extensions.
Recommended for power users only.
Applications
oline197.zip (316KB) - The
online application that I am using on the main page which allows me to chat with you
through a browser.
6x86ss.zip (3.2MB) - A 6x86
screen saver from IBM. It is very well done and looks pretty cool too.
mxsaver.exe (2.6MB) - A 6x86MX screen saver direct from Cyrix. Supposedly it has
been designed to run on a PC featuring an MMX enabled Cyrix 6x86MX processor. I love it
and normally I despise screen savers.
6x86mxss.zip (2.1MB) - A 6x86MX screen saver from IBM. Very slick!
Other
winchip.zip (1.17MB) - An official IDT C6 WinChip user group
presentation in PowerPoint 4.0 format. IDT gives this presentation to PC User Groups
around the country. It is the single most comprehensive source of WinChip information that I have found. It is
definitely worth the download time if you are interested in the WinChip.
