OSwise - Is supporting mixed speed CPU's really that hard?

I am most familiar with commercial operating systems. I wouldn't call myself an expert but I'm not aware of one OS that supports this. Many clustered OS support this but I am speaking of a single OS image on a single physical system.

Is this mostly a case of vendors not wanting to do the work due to greed/cost or are the technical challenges steep enough that make it cost prohibitive?
