Perhaps not primarily because of unawareness. But some nice fundamental improvements are still under way, because they had to be invented/discovered first, before they could be refined and implemented. Nothing revolutionary, perhaps, but the acme of evolution is always the sum of many small steps.
The step size and step frequency is still a little higher on the GPU side.
