I do not know what you are used to using but my NNTP client has better archiving and searching then most if not all web based forums that I visit. Certainly it has greater availability and much faster UI response.
Unfortunately, NNTP like SMTP suffers from both a lack of authentication and effective moderation leading to a poor signal to noise ratio. Web based forums have greater flexibility for combating these problems.
