A reputable journalist will not take a rumor and make a story out of it without getting some kind of corroboration from a knowledgable source (even if unofficially), even if it is just too juicy to pass up (like saying 150K employees will be laid off).

Sometimes companies 'leak' information intentionally to generate buzz and keep a future product in the minds of potential customers. There is some value in preventing customers from purchasing when they know they will need to upgrade soon, because something wonderful is just around the corner.
