You'd think so, but you'd be wrong. Itanium actually mostly
gets less work done per core and per cycle.

Just look at the SpecInt numbers. Nehalem beats at least
Montvale by more than the frequency difference. Who
knows about Tukwila, but there's nothing to indicate that
it has improved at a core level.

And yeah, yeah, it depends a bit on the benchmark. Itanium
does relatively better on hmmer and astar, for example. But
even if you ignore the libquantum results (you should),
Nehalem generally outperforms Itanium even at work-per-cycle.

Itanium CPI probably looks better if you count all the
instructions that don't actually help (ie speculation,
address generation, nops, whatever). But the only way to
compare CPI across architectures is to look at the actual
work done, not unequal instruction counts, and no,
Itanium doesn't do any more work per cycle.

In-order really is a dead end if you ever care about
performance. Doing wide instructions just means that
you stall more instructions at a time.
