I'm not comparing to Nehalem EX, the Intel Xeon benchmark is/was run on Nehalem EP, which BTW will have a 6core/12thread "Westmere" replacement within 6 months that will clock higher. That will provide for a more direct comparison. Also note that the POWER7 in this benchmark was actually clocking at 3,640 MHz according to the detailed report using IBM's TuboBoost equivalent.

I don't know what you mean by hammer? In my mind that means clobber/crush. I think the Nehalem EX (4 - 8 socket) will be very competitive in raw performance terms compared to POWER7 equivalent socket/core/memory counts. This in my mind means within 15-20%. In terms of price performance it will be the POWER7 that gets hammered. If IBM stays true to forcing customers to purchase their overpriced memory you will feel the pain.

On the high-end >8 sockets I absolutely agree that IBM will put out a monster TPC-C benchmark if/when they roll out the POWER7 based 595 replacement. I can't see anything coming close when measure by sockets/cores/memory as a common denominator.

But in the 8 socket or less space I'm thinking the Intel Xeon team will be grabbing a lot of market share due to the compelling price/performance. And this will be backed up in my opinion with some substantial 4 - 8 socket benchmarks that put it within the 15-20% of the the POWER7.
