The last server I bought for my school it turned out to be significantly cheaper to buy a 2S system and only populate one socket than to get a 1S system. The only way that makes sense is economies of scale making 2S systems cheaper since they are far more common. Though I do agree 4S is a bit out of the mainstream.

Overall I think as core count skyrockets socket count is going to matter less and less except as David points out in terms of memory capacity.
