It seems however that the words of Marc Lehmann, GCC project team member, from start of this century have become reality. When it was still unclear whether IA-64 or x86-64 would get the dominant platform, in an e-mail towards me he pointed out that the move towards 64 bits would prove to be the ultimate disaster for GCC.
Looking backwards his prediction of nearly 10 years ago has been very very accurate.
