Article: AMD's Bulldozer Microarchitecture

1st: Thanks for the great in depth article !

2nd: Questions ;-)

a)You got wrong information about Interlagos, see Triskain's post.

b)What do you mean with XBAR ? That term was so far a synonym for AMD's switchfabric between the cores, L3, I/O & IMC in the uncore part, sometimes also still named northbridge. I am surprised to see that term used as a pipeline label, I think you got the wrong name there.

c) In the Fetch/Predict chapter you wrote something about the "Loop Detector of Pentium M". Do you mean the Loop Stream Detector ? If yes, this was a new feature of Core, not P-M. If it is something else, never mind ;-)

In case for AMD, they have a patent for this, called Redirect recovery cache, which is used to reduce miss penalties. I am sure that you have seen it before, but because I have the patent pictures currently at hand, I'll post them again for convenience:

Kudos goes as so often to Dresdenboy for finding it.

d) You wrote that the decoder's changes are "far less dramatic".
Do you know that for sure, or could this also be part of AMD's "coyness" ?

Thanks again for the article

Alex
