The system for Rock provided dynamic fallback. Not only
could software decide to retry immediately, retry after
some delay, revert to a locking mechanism, or otherwise
handle a failed transaction, but means for the hardware to
communicate the nature of the failure were also being
developed. (Or did you mean by 'dynamic fallback' that
hardware would handle transaction failures or anticipate
transaction failures?)
I agree that the Rock transactions were too fragile.
