Apple could replace its ARM chip with PowerPC or some other design and no one would give a shit.

Apple clearly has and will continue to design the chips that matter to shrink a computing system down to make a mass market appliance.
The CPU does not matter to that equation, yet.
When it soon does Apple will be there with a solution that matters.

Apple is the only one that would pay to have it made.
These displays exist as an item consumers can buy because of Apple.
Soon all good displays will be quad res, something that would not happen this decade without Apple.

My ~7 year old 32inch $4,000 Apple display needs a quad pixel update.
Been marking time since before the iPhone4.
Late this year or next.

How many years will it take the PC companies combined to match Apples volumes of quad pixel monitors, Apple only has ~10% of the market.
(Apple will switch most Macs overnight without warning to quad pixel.)

Apples PowerPC northbridge chip was crap stuck at 66MHz forever, the volumes did not cost justify an update.

Apple has been forthright about making software stand on its head to save a few transistors.
Apple// graphics modes were not so fun to program.

Hell, the 6502 was a crap processor compared to the Z80, but it was cheap.
Cheap was more important to making a mass customer appliance.
