Visual studio 2005 totally annihilates all those compilers.
They need too many simple instructions to get things done.

The L1i is a very tiny cache in 64 bits especially.

The progress all these compilers made is for C++ codes. Most C++ codes have deep layered classes that really slows down. With 1 exception of a NCSA coder, all other N*SA coders simply have no clue how to write C++ code equally fast to fast C code as they love templates and putting things in classes too much.

Which generates massive amounts of simple instructions, yet objectively seen that is all useless overhead.

So there is progress for 64 bits code and C++ code, yet visual c++ 2005 already completely annihilates these compilers.

Knowing visual c++ 2005 is from 2005 and the first visual studio product to have profile guided optimizations, it really is shocking.

Please note the PGO stage of open64/pgi really works well, yet the code it produces by default is so ugly slow (far far behind everyone else) that it doesn't make up enough.

We can explain this of course easily; the mipspro compiler didn't have pgo at all, so the explanation why the pgo code is working so great for modern processors in open64/pgi is because they had to make that part new. The other part seems to have not been improved at all past 10 years.

It generated crap code when i ran at SGI supercomputers, already losing me 50% speed compared to intel c++ compilers the other guys were using (you know you have a big supercomputer and you start losing already 50% just to compiler, that really is horrible) and i don't see progress there for C codes.

Please note my software is in C. C++ is too slow.
