See my other posting there; in terms of bugfixing it really runs behind other compilers; it produces code that will crash your software, even if you verify that the actual code in your program where it causes a crash, isn't having the bug it produces.

'amazingly' the pgi compiler doesn't suffer from those same bugs, so i would be very amazed if the developers didn't deliberate cause open64 to have those bugs and took care pgi, based upon same release, does not.

It really runs behind this compiler, despite that pgo works well for it.

Without using pgo this is 50% slower than intel compiler for generic codes.

Yet for testruns i normally do not use pgo. So that makes this a very bad compiler.

Pathscale is more bugfree. Yet it's also pretty much slower. Further testing i didn't do, as it really was also not even in the same league like visual c++ 2005.

Much of the differences get caused by using too many instructions to get something simple done.

I can illustrate this easily using some FFT code i wrote, and i wouldn't have a problem giving away that code, in contradiction to the other codes.

A 64 x 64 giving a 128 bits output multiplication in GCC and similar linux compilers requires several dozens of instructions, whereas i was interested only in that multiplication instruction.

Visual studio with intrinsic requires 10 instructions.

In Assembler i'd use just 1 instruction there.

Back to complex algorithmic code:
the overhead of all sort of 'cheap' instructions is so big from the GCC type compilers that though cheap, they really pollute L1i, which gives the huge difference, as the L1i missrate is already 1.34% going up to 1.6% for this code.

So the generated code in itself is not so bad if you look from microviewpoint at it, but from macroviewpoint it is less compact than intel c++ / visual studio with as a result that intel and visual just completely annihilate these compilers. In fact the 2005 version of visual studio is 20% faster.

Realizing it is 2011 now, that really is shocking. Something 6 years old beats GCC, PGI (open64) and pathscale at integer codes.
