Oh, now I get it.

According to you, I should spend some non-trivial amount of time on optimizing SParse and give society the modified source code for free. [A heavy dose of irony follows.] Who cares whether I have something to eat - such primitive physiological needs are completely besides the point. In fact, that is not at all the primary cause of why I do not want to share my stuff with the outside world.

Wait ... wait ... I have a better idea. How about I devote some months of work to optimizing the escape analysis algorithms in Sun's (whoops, Oracle's) JDK. Then I will simply send the modifications to Oracle for free, and everybody will be happy.

No ... wait ... wait ... I have an even better idea. How about I devote a year (nee, two years) to the development of a new Linux filesystem that can flawlessly do online defragmentation, transparent compression, automatically confines directories to a continuous area on the disk, and automatically optimizes the layout of data on the disk to achieve maximum performance of applications? Then I will simply send the patch to kernel.org, and everybody will be happy. The world will be better.

Oh ... wait ... wait ... I got another fantastic idea! How about I devote a year to bring dynamic code generation to Bash, and while I am at it I will also do it for Python and Perl? Then I will simply give away all the source code for free. Everybody will be happy.

Argh ... wait ... I got another super-ultra-superior idea. How about I spend 5 years (err, maybe that is a bit too low) of my life creating a new C/C++ compiler that will turn GCC into a cuuute little plastic green dinosaur. Then I will simply make the compiler free to anybody (even terrorists and corrupt governments will be able to use it - and it will make my heart feel so warm). Hurray. Everybody is happy. I will then simply die sometime after that and finally rest in peace, assured that I did the right thing and assured that the modern world wasn't the embodiment of "homo homini lupus".

... and while working on these ideas, living in a nice flat and having no worries about the future at all, some guys from a microprocessor company will drop by to bring me their newest N-thread processor of theirs before it is officially released so that I can play with it.

Oh ... the world is so warm ... colorful ... and beautiful. There is no injustice ... there is no poverty ... all people are equal to each other ... there are no records of slavery in the books of history ... rich people don't want to get even richer ... no weapon's of mass destruction ... ... there are no man-made business cycles ... extraterrestrials will not try to enslave us when mankind meets them in the distant future ... every employer is openly handing all information about his/her salary to all employees ... the patent law is not in contradiction with freedom of thinking ...

[End of some heavy irony]

Everybody will benefit ... ... ... except myself.
