* ARM microproccesors are designed for lower performance and unlikely to match x86 performance in the next few years

We are speaking of an Apple designed core, compatible with the ARM 64-bit ISA. Your argument is irrelevant

* High-end ARM designs may not have a power efficiency advantage over x86. Clean sheet design will have power efficiency over x86. x86 have never been designed for low power (unless you consider matching 'ATOM' and 'designed' in the same sentence)

* Emulating x86 on ARM is necessary for compatibility and reduces performance and efficiency even further. No, the software will adapt, to be the first available in the new Apple magic !!!

* Thunderbolt I/O is probably not available on ARM
Minor point. Apple has endorsed this technology only because it has extracted sufficient legal provisions from Intel to be certain of not ever being locked with them (they have as many layer than M$)

* No second source ARM vendors for key components such as the GPU. Minor point, moreover Apple has share in Imagination. Do you know what Imagination is designing for Apple right now ?

* Intel and AMD already do an excellent job competing to meet Apple’s needs. WRONG: Apple need low power. Apple do not sell any kind of server (or in any significant volume).
Thus AMD and Intel are focused on performance. Apple is focused on user experience. That different. User experience can be provided by more clever means that brute force (server like).

In your article you said: it would cost 200 millions $ for Apple to design their CPU ... well you prove my point entirely:
- cost of PA semi acquisition: 278 M$
- cost of Intrinsity acquisition: 121 M$

Concerning the experience of the teams:
- PA SEMI -> high end 2 Ghz multi core 64-bit OoO PPC, tapped out and working fine ....
- Intrinsity: 2 Ghz MIPS in 2002 !!!! on TSMC process ... excuse me !!!

you see ? Why on earth make such expensive acquisition, with such teams, to NOT DESIGN a CPU !!! To design a SOC ? You're kidding !

The question is just about facts: all the facts leads to the conclusion that Apple is designing a 64-bit CPU, ARM ISA based, probably incompatible to some extend (simplification to get more performance) with regular 32-bit ARM ISA.

Once you now this FACT, you know that Intel is out of Apple in 3 years from now. Moreover it is just an extraordinary illustration for Apple of the 'thinks different' marketing campaign ...
