Dual CPU makes more sense than dropping x86

Maybe not with the same name. But was the MacBook Air as
fast as their existing laptops, or was it a slower but
sexier lighter low-power product ? You might see similar
tricks, where the new product isn't positioned as a
direct replacement, but rather as a new product. And then
over time the old product might fade out.

As for the MacBook Pro, I would think that the argument
for changing the MacBook Pro (and of course the Mac Pro)
away from x86 would be weak: those are premium products
where performance is important, and are pricy enough
that saving $50 on the cpu isn't going to be important.
The likely change would be to - or alongside - the
MacBook and MacBook Air.

Doesn't seem likely to me: if you're paying for the x86
cpu, and the associated power and cooling and weight to
allow it to go fast sometimes, then the marginal power
difference between running the x86 in low-power mode
and running an ARM is not going to be the worth the vast
increase in hardware and software complexity.

The big win from Apple's point of view - and something which
they have pursued aggressively through the Mac Mini,
MacBook Air, and iPad - is to have a light small-form-factor
machine with low peak power and cooling requirement (as well
as low average power). I expect them to stick with that
strategy, which has been phenomenally profitable, no matter
how skeptical the speed-freaks on this forum might be.
