As raw computing hardware, I'd agree. And I assume you're
basing that judgment on what they're like when you run
Linux on them ? But that's missing the point: the vast
majority of the people buying MacBooks and MacBook Pros
are doing so because they like the look and feel and
reliability and productivity of MacOS and various MacOS
apps. And for intangible factors like the lasting
satisfaction from the iPod they had as a teenager, or a
bad experience with a Windows "Blue Screen of Death".

I don't think the hardware has been that great: my wife has
fried the motherboards or graphics in a couple of MacBook
Pro's by doing sustained 3D graphics or video editing,
and they get too hot and shut down from time to time.
But the whole Mac user experience is about a lot more than
the raw hardware.

Definitely. And isn't that what Apple thinks too ? I
checked the specs, and over the 5-year lifetime of the
Intel-based MacBook, it has progressed only from a Core Duo
2.0GHz in May 2006 to a Core2 Duo 2.4GHz in May 2010.
Apple doesn't make leading-edge single-thread performance
a priority for the MacBook - and something in the ballpark
of TI's OMAP5 (dual ARM Cortex A15, 3-issue OoO, 2.5GHz)
might be as fast than current MacBook's (though I
suspect Apple would want 64bit capability, and a bit more
performance than that).
