I wonder why.

With the extreme redundancy available for memory-type
structures, highly defective chips would be rare, so the
low capacity chips might be either manufactured on an
older process (so even with fully amortized fabs the
price per bit may be higher) or sacrifice a larger fraction
of chip area to die separation and I/O overheads. Volume
would also be a factor; low-capacity chips may have a
very small market.

I was under the impression that some work was being done to
address this defect by providing parallel channels in a
single chip, but I can see that the situation is worse than
I thought. For cheap laptop use, matching sequential
write speed might not be as important. For a cheap
accelerator, sequential write speed would also be less
important.

I was comparing the price of USB flash drives to minimum
hard disk prices. A 16GB USB drive is much less expensive
than the cheapest new disk drive and performs noticeably
better than a laptop drive for reads (especially if the
disk drive spins down!).

For an internal PCIe unit, no case would be needed--another
advantage of solid state--and the power circuitry could
probably be much simpler (not using the SATA power
connectors). A 16GB card should be able to at least match
the price of a USB drive with the same capacity and provide
perhaps slightly better performance. Or am I missing
something? (I also do not know whether a meaningful amount
of logic could be moved onto the motherboard which could
reduce the cost of the card, perhaps without noticeably
increasing the cost of the motherboard.)

I am still not entirely convinced that a cheap lower-
capacity flash card is not practical, in large part because
USB drives are so cheap. However, there may not be enough
demand for such to overcome the benefits of larger
capacity storage.
