That is simply a diagram of the reference platform, not necessarily all Medfield designs. The external components are not mandatory (except the PMIC, which must meet certain specs).
In the discussion, Intel's engineers specifically said that the 3G modem could be from anyone and that they are happy to work with QCOM or any 3rd party. I would assume that is true of Wifi, GPS and other I/O devices as well.
