I am afraid you are missing the main lines here. Microsoft has a monopoly on the desktop, hence they are in a position to push what ever they want down your and anybody else's throat. Nvidia has never been (and as it seems, will never be) in any such position. Hence, your comparison is irrelevant.
Actually, Nvidia has shot itself in the foot trying to control GPGPU. It has hurt GPGPU in general, and the one player it has hurt most is Nvidia. They need to get their act together if they want to keep being the preferred vendor in HPC markets. The sales they have achieved is despite their proprietary tactics, not because of it. With open standards and implementations from day one, GPGPU would have been much more than it is today. I am not so sure my next workstation will have an nvidia quadro card in it.
