Film has a couple of inherent advantages over digital. The first is not-so-gradually disappearing with the newer cinema cameras and their improving dynamic range, now close to what negative film offers. Red's Dragon sensor might even exceed negative film's dynamic range, but it's hard to say before they start shipping them. :)

The other is that film's grain structure isn't ordered like the photosite grid on a digital sensor. The resulting randomness has a smoothing effect on the frame, which is very pleasing to the eye.

This is analogous to one big difference between CG from newbies when compared to CG from seasoned animators. The newbie CG typically looks perfect and is therefore not believable, while seasoned animators' CG is rife with imperfections like slight asymmetries, dirt, and wear. It's far less perfect looking, and far more believable as a result.

I'm not saying that it's not possible for digital to look as good as film, only that in general it doesn't, yet.
