You seldom have that kind of visible MLP except for trivial loads.

And you ignore the fact that caches work. They work really really well for almost all cases.

So prefetching is a win only if

(a) the hardware can't do it better anyway (arrays)

Yes, there's tons of broken hardware out there that sucks, and that is teh #1 reason for sw doing prefetches, but it's the hardware that is broken.

(b) you actually fairly reliably miss in the cache

This often changes between machines, and between loads. The same code may be called for things that cache well, and for things that have horrible cache behavior. Do you penalize the "it's all in the L1 cache" case in order to help the "it has horrible cache misses" case?

(c) the data structures are simple and straightforward enough that prefetching is easy

The traditional case is arrays, but let's face it, modern hardware does a better job. The very Haswell example that triggered this thread was all about a kind of pattern that the current crop of CPU's detect on their own, so it's already stale.

With more complex data structures (ie hash tables, lists, pretty much anything but an array, you seldom have any amount of time to prefetch at all. It's pointer-chasing. The prefetching patterns can be there, but they'd depend on things like allocation order etc. Maybe a list was allocated all consecutively, so the list chasing actually has a "stride" to it - but you don't necessarily even know at the time you're walking it.

SW prefetching really is about very quickly diminishing returns.
