BTW, it is interesting to see the sort of things Apple is now patenting as a possible indicator of where they are headed.
For example we have:

which talks about better ways to embed pilots in OFDM channels.
8,621,174
which shows Dominic is still hard at work (or at least was as of 2011!). I'm guessing the real target of this particular patent is Fusion drives and the idea of making them work better via intelligent movement of the FS metadata between SSD and HD.
8,621,412
which suggests that Apple is thinking about auto place and route. (I have no expertise to judge whether the actual content of the patent is interesting or not.)
