Did the team that was responsible for Rock produce any chip that can be considered successful after original UltraSparc, which happened very long time ago?
UltraSparc-IIIi and UltraSparc-IV were decent, but not the best in class. The rest of US line was not even decent relatively to best contemporaries. And Millennium was a major failure.
That [bleak] record of success stands in sharp contrast to the record of the second Sun CPU team, that which had key people inherited from Afara. The second team delivered at time and often at performance level above expectations.
So, may be, Larry was just looking for a way to get rid of the team that he considered losers? If it's true, he would tell us that Rock is a dog pretty much independently of its actual merits.
