Did the team that was responsible for Rock produce any chip that can be considered successful after original UltraSparc, which happened very long time ago?
UltraSparc-IIIi and UltraSparc-IV were decent, but not the best in class. The rest of US line was not even decent relatively to best contemporaries. And Millennium was a major failure.

So, may be, Larry was just looking for a way to get rid of the team that he considered losers? If it's true, he would tell us that Rock is a dog pretty much independently of its actual merits.
