They could probably be used in compression/decompression, crypto, signal processing, small or exotic rendering tasks that aren't worth the GPU overhead, stuff like that.

Personally I use it heavily in console emulation code. This is a niche but not a totally meaningless one; the more popular ones garner hundreds of thousands to millions of downloads on Android.
