Mixing 32b and 64b code in a kernel

Huh? I don't understand what you mean by this... The only case I've ever heard of that mixed 32b and 64b code in the same kernel was OS X, which had a 32 bit PAE kernel that supported 64 bit apps for a couple revs during their migration to a full 64 bit kernel. Linux distros use a full 64 bit kernel, and the entire userland is 64 bits as well when you do a 64 bit install - even /bin/true is a 64 bit binary on my Fedora install.

Of course, there's nothing stopping one from building Linux with a 64 bit kernel and 32 bit userland. If the 32 bit binaries in a particular ISA were faster (due to reduced effective cache size when running 64 bit code) or smaller then there might be a reason to do so. If that's true for ARM64 the first 64 bit tablets/phones might do this on the theory that no single app needs more than 4GB but collectively all apps + the kernel does. If not, all the built in apps, even trivial ones like the clock and calculator, likely will be 64 bit even though they don't need to be just as they are on Fedora and other Linux distros. Of course they'd still need to support 32 bit third party apps for a few years at least.
