We've had occasional problems, but if a 32-bit distro doesn't work when you upgrade the kernel to a 64-bit kernel, please holler.

It's true that some things change, and if an application wants to break on a 64-bit kernel it can (most trivially by looking at various system information in /proc and not parsing 64-bit values). And some of the more esoteric ioctl's etc may not have compatibility support, so some of the more specialized stuff may break.

And obviously, some things are really tied into the system, and if you require hardware support for vm86 mode you're not going to be able to use a 64-bit kernel.

But dhcp? Please file a bugreport on the kernel (and if it then turns out that the dhcp client goes to extreme measures to try to be broken we may just say "sorry", but in general "basic functionality" like dhcp should work).

Sometimes it's hard. ioctl's are nasty unstructured things, and then some people argue for replacing them with various messaging protocols that are even less structured and often have endianness, alignment/padding and word size issues.

So mistakes happen, and they often take a long time to even notice (because mixing 32-bit user space with a 64-bit kernel is not common - most people run 64-bit base distributions and have perhaps some individual applications still using the 32-bit mode). But we try to fix them when they are reported.
