Is Cinebench a totally useless benchmark?

What benchmark you use depends on what you want to know. As it turns out, this
particular benchmark maps pretty well with my real-world experience. When I'm trying
to estimate performance, I start with a single thread/CPU, then add more to see what
the scaling effect is. With Turbo modes, dynamic clock scaling, thermal management, etc.
in modern CPUs trying to figure out anything like this is just about impossible from
figures posted on the web. A single thread benchmark, OTHOH, probably just runs at the
maximum turbo clock speed, so I can use that info to get an idea of IPC performance.

For my local testing, I turn all that off. Its get turned back on when
things get closer to production to get the "real-world" numbers.

As noted elsewhere, this benchmark probably fits in the caches fairly well. I think it
gives a particularly good view of how well the architecture changes in each generation
worked out.
