Moore's Law provided Planned Obsolescence

There were three things driving the large majority of consumer demand for performance since the 1 GHz Athlon days. The "Windows XP gets slower and slower over time" problem, the "antivirus software seems to require infinite resources" problem, and the "rotating media is slow" problem.

Had CPU performance increases stopped dead in their tracks with the 1 GHz Athlon how many people do you think would really be dissatisfied with the performance if the following were true:

1) we were using newer versions of Windows that don't get slower over time (as far as I can tell, Windows 7 seems to have fixed that issue, but I use Windows so rarely now that maybe I just don't have enough hours on a Windows 7 install yet for that to happen)

2) DRAM development continued, so we could have 2GB of RAM (can't really use more with the 32 bit Athlon anyway)

3) We still had the modern GPU, to handle Windows 7's fancy effects with the GPU not the CPU and keep the gamers happy

4) AV software was not necessary

5) We used a modern SSD in that Athlon system
