I have been following this discussion and have decided to add my 2 cents worth.
(for background I am a 70 year old retired programmer who made a living for years writing
programs in assembler and later cobol and c primarily for various DEC machines.)
While Linus is probably quite aware of what I am about to say I haven't seen him say it.
The average programmer out in the real world is a lousy coder who does not understand how a
computer even works at the ISA level. Any way he can screw up he will. He does not even understand
all of the rules and nuances of whatever high level language he is coding in.
ANY thing that can be done to protect the rest of us from him is a GREAT IDEA!!!
I say 'he' because normally when I worked with a female programmer they had better skills
because back then if they didn't they wouldn't have gotten the job. I don't know if that situation has changed.
