At least with the GPU, it's a thing where one can purchase the vehicle, and get the upgrade further down the road. A bit like you'd have an automobile and you'd purchase higher levels of cover for risks like accidents and repairs, or not. I.e. The option is not hard-welded to the vehicle, or vehicles that one may own and drive. When you think about it, when you already four, six, eight or more Intel large cores - and one decided to add a couple of hundred extra small ones - that is really like the concept of 'buying insurance' cover, in case. Whereas, the problem is, Intel seem to have been polluted with marketing/branding expertise from other industries like automobiles, too much.

I.e. Introducing the cool new features (which no one even uses) into automobile models at the top end, and allowing those features to 'trickle' from the top down over time, to cheaper models. It's something that can work within an industry like automobiles (large amounts of 'inventory' standing parked in automobile sales yards for long amounts of time). But can be detrimental in terms of getting benefits of 'ecosystem' effect, in computer technology. Trying to get the microprocessor supply chain to operate like the automobile one, seems to be a poor choice of approach at Intel. Sort of like when Apple started to operate it's business like soda water.

As I suggested here:
