Yes. Jumping into the middle of an existing trace generally forces a new trace entry. So even if that trace itself is composed entirely of 100% predicted branches, if there are other places that jump into the middle of such a code, you now end up with two traces for the same code.

We spent a _lot_ of effort on that kind of uniqueness analysis at TMTA, since it matters a lot for the effective size of the trace cache (which in our case was big, but even then ended up being pretty directly about our I$ hit rate - you can't afford to blow up code even if you have tons of memory for it). And it's mostly solvable, but often at a big cost in trace length. Which in turn ends up making traces much less optimizable, since a large part of the argument for traces over just a simple pre-decode cache is to use the trace information to your advantage.

And it all has a huge complexity cost - and we could afford to have some complexity, since we did it in software. I'd shudder to think what was going on in a P4.

End result: on anything but trivial nice tight loops, you get small traces, frequent trace invalidations, and lots of time when you run without good trace information.

Nasty. I enjoyed it all, don't get me wrong, but I enjoyed it because I was working on challenging stuff with some really really smart people. Some traces looked absolutely stunningly good, but in most cases the stuff that didn't just bring you down a lot.
