No. They get balanced between them by picking the instructions out of groups. But no matter what, they do not get segregated by register usage, so they do not help rename.

> What does grouping do then?

Let's just finish this vast crazy train of thought before starting a new one. We can easily read together from public documents about what grouping does. I don't think that gives enough information to really understand the pros and cons of it, but I do not pretend that I do. I am asking you who clearly asserted you knew what it did and how it helped rename.

> It doesn't help decode, it's unrelated to dispatch, according to you it does nothing at all.

I never said it's unrelated to dispatch. Try harder. Point between dispatch and issue is when instructions stop being tied to groups (until back to in order retirement).

Presumably they haven't found cost benefit.

You didn't answer the question.

So? That's not any grouping rule.

Lol. You fail to realize the whole microarchitecture including group formation and split issue queues for ALU/LSU halves is evolved very closely from the POWER4 design. SMT has been bolted on.

Single and multi threaded performance. More the latter than Intel or Apple, but that doesn't mean you can say the focus was on just one or the other.

No it doesn't because POWER8 does not have 8 wide rename.

I will as soon as you are able to explain your assertions that I have been asking about.
