Anyways, for the processes that could benefit I think the "voluntarily shortening" approach seems more promising: a special type of lock can call yield() or whatever before acquiring the key lock near the end of its slice. This can already be implemented in userspace, except for efficient detection of the "near the end of its slice" part.
