Speaking of the nineties Maynard, don't know if you listened to any of Jaron Lanier's talks in the recent view years. He does some work at Microsoft research and as best as I can tell, it falls into the category of offering some continued institutional knowledge and memory, over trends in computing and networks that have occurred over the last several decades. The advantage being, that Jaron has been thinking and writing a lot about this business, since back in the eighties.
His Citris talk, The Surveillance Economy and Extreme Income Inequality: You Can't Have One Without the Other, was about the most coherent one that I found, and liked a listen of. He's describing something about technology and engineering over a time span, that is similar to the point that you made.
