Present and Future of Computing

Hi all,

I've already seen a few threads where someone attempts to forecast what the market and the industry will look like in the upcoming years, but I was more curious if someone had references regarding the footprint of computing.

Say by only looking at Watts, how much do datacenters + HPC + personal + mobile + infrastructure + manufacturing would represent? Is that a lot in the grand scheme of things and would drastically reducing this consumption make a dent? Of course the CO² footprint of computing (manufacturing excluded) is only as bad as the power generating method, so I was thinking along the lines of closing a datacenter that is powered by coal is easier than replacing the coal plant by renewable and/or nuclear. Also, closing a FB datacenter might be a service to the people but then it starts being partisan and no one likes that :)

I'm also interested in your opinion regarding the future. Most people seem excited with, basically, growth (more devices, more computing power, more $$$) in this sector, but growth is by definition unsustainable on our finite planet. Moreover, if we end up doing what we can/should and drastically change our way of life to limit the damages in the decades to come, I'm wondering what that would mean for computing in general. For instance, if we are forced to limit power generation to curb CO² emissions (and note, as I understand it, curbing is already not enough), should we prioritize keeping the submarine cables powered and thus global communication through internet, or maybe supercomputers to favor compute-intensive research?

Note that I was not really looking into discussing whether climate change is real and whether we have a responsibility to do something about it. For those who might disagree with one or both previous statements, let's make it a thought experiment.
