You are right, I never had access to those processors, where the costs of various instructions could be very different, causing other instruction choices.

Nevertheless, I have written performance-oriented programs for several Motorola/Freescale PowerPC processors.


Obviously, poor implementation of a combined instruction can make preferable its replacement by a sequence of equivalent instructions. Like on x86 where many programs could be better written with double shift instructions, but most CPUs have a bad implementation of them, so you have to use a double number of simple shift instructions.


There are examples of complex instructions which should not be included in an ISA, because it is not worthwhile to implement them in a way that would have better performance than the equivalent sequence of simple instructions and they also are not frequently enough used to influence the code size.


I do not believe that combined instructions for load/store + address addition belong there.

Most loops need these operations and regardless how you encode them, you always have to execute both operations. There are various choices for the operands of the addition (e.g. current pointer + a displacement to the next object or fixed base + a variable offset), but some addition must always be done.


If there is no other way to take advantage of the combined instruction, the decoder can split it into 2 micro-operations, but at least you have reduced a lot the code size.

Even if the 2 operations are not encoded in a single instruction, any fast implementation must be able to execute them in parallel anyway.
