The next generation of processors will be 8 wide, but branches average every 4 instructions, wasting that width unless one does speculation. You are better off executing code inside short forward branches if that code ever gets run on average.

Benchmarks care more about performance, in x86 land being 5% faster single threaded means being able to charge twice as much for your CPU.

To declare wasted work important means that today at 6 wide we are at the end of CPU performance.

One could get that idea looking at Intel’s performance improvement over the last decade, but that is just a symptom of a monopoly resistant to change.
The next leap in performance is coming.
New CPU design is not yet dead.
