I fully agree with Linus's argument. I SAW the change happen and how it happened. I helped some people start a regional ISP back in the early 90s when I introduced them to linux back in the way early days. The fact that they could slap Linux on pretty much any old computer back then and get competitive performance of high end servers for a small faction of the price opened up so many options.

I was working at a major university network as they transitioned from Sun/HP to x86 linux, once again, because employees were able to run it at home and brought it into work.

If you can't run it on the move and at home, its not going to be a large scale dev platform and it won't be able to compete.
