The mighty Intel juggernaut has run aground after 30 years of dominance, and people whose whole career has been spent in that environment have failed to notice the change because they are submerged in the detail. Spectre is not just an inconvenience that can be patched. It brings in the end of speculative processing, for good. Fortunately RISC marched on quietly on the margins so there is a working alternative. Secondly CISC (= Intel = X86) has been stalled for several years at the threshold of sub 10 nm architecture. Intel can build samples but they can’t manufacture it at a marketable price. The market has been waiting patiently but Intel still can’t pull it off. In the meantime other people are selling 7 nm chips. This breaks a paradigm.
Linus could still be right. We will know in the next few quarters. If Intel doesn’t pull a rabbit out of the hat pretty soon, RISC will eat their lunch.
