Probably last dozen games I've bought on DVD I still installed by download, because entering the registration code and watching the download complete is easier than inserting the disk, entering the registration code and watching the installation and download complete.
For consoles, the last generation (PS3 and Xbox 360) had many games with such a long installation times that you were better off leaving them doing their thing than actively waiting. Downloading is simply more convenient option in such case, even if it takes somewhat longer, unless your connection is too slow or has some download limit.
