Application matters

If I'm video editing, gaming, or compiling large code projects, that's happening on a desktop. A 4-wide desktop chip clocked over 50% faster than the A12X is going to be slightly faster when there's ILP to be extracted. And it's going to be A LOT faster when code is latency bound.

A really wide core at 2.5 GHz is quite interesting, but it doesn't get us any more per-core performance than what we had half a decade ago with 4-wide chips running above 4 GHz. Now 4-wide chips are hitting 5 GHz.

As for my cell phone, it's snappy enough with a Snapdragon 821 at 2.34 GHz for web browsing, email checking, and whatever other apps I've run on it. Sometimes it throttles to 1.5 GHz or something, but even then it's fine for what I do on a cell phone.

The same applies to an i5 or A12X stuck in a tiny power envelope - I'm not looking to run long, compute-heavy tasks on chips not meant to handle them. If both load my web pages and emails in a split second, a comparison between them is rather meaningless.
