Just maybe, the desktop CPU market has been completely stagnant. What's the latest intel uarch in 2015? Skylake. What's the latest intel uarch in 2019? Skylake. Hmmm...I wonder why people aren't upgrading...hmmmmmmm

Also, if everyone were using storage-bound programs as you suggested earlier, people would have stopped at dual core 2.3 ghz athlons from a decade ago. Those are plenty fast for email, web surfing, and word processing. So maybe, just maybe, the desktop market is still around because people do things that need cpu power.
