Xeon E or Xeon W or Zen 2?

I was looking at getting a Xeon E but the number of IO lanes seems poor to get dual NVMe + GPU.

The Xeon W seems better. But very expensive.

Now I'm wondering about Zen 2, perhaps Ryzen 7 3700X.

On paper this seems like a better choice?

I can't imagine a desktop will need more than 4c most of the time, so higher clock-speed for a modest number of cores seems more desirable that larger number of slower cores.

I'm wondering if anyone here has looked into this recently?

Is AMD really leading in terms of performance?

Are there any compatibility issues to be concerned about?

AVX512 seems like a nice idea though I am not sure I really have much use for it.
