I have never worked on code that checked the return code on typical allocations, the idea is absurd.
The iOS way is that you get a low memory event, which gives you a sane way to handle the issue in one location, not tens of thousands of locations that are impossible to debug and thus would not work.

The idea of large allocation churn is wrong, sooner or later memory fragmentation will cause a allocation failure, one which would not happen with smaller allocations.
