It is easier and cost-effective to remove 1 faulty CPU core from a vertical stack of 4 initially independent CPU cores than to cut 1 faulty CPU core from a 2*2 or 4*1 planar structure, assuming that in the case of 4*1 the faulty CPU core is not on the edge.
