Why not initialize all variables to zero?

This DOES NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. Instead, it just tends
to hide existing bugs and makes bugs much harder to find.
(And those codes where meteorologists (to name one frequent
class of offenders) have followed an "initialize everything
to zero" ideology are a real PITA to diagnose and fix!)

And it makes it impossible to use compiler "trap-uninitialized"
flags (which, curiously enough even exists for Bourne or BASH
shell-scripts!)

I always make it a practice to use these facilities during
testing... both of my own codes and those of others. Frequently,
this finds algorithm-errors in the latter for me... and sometimes
even my own bugs :-)
