I had it several time in the project I work on that an initialized value was wrong. It was always due to bad practices of mindlessly initializing the variables AND defining them at the top of the function like it was mandatory in old C AND writing functions that are too big (bad structuring).
The C++ feature which was then also adopted by C99 of defining variables anywhere in the program flow (and inside a for() statement) COMPLETELY eliminate the issue if the variable is initialized explicitely with the right value.

This said, D also showed that default initializing all variables is not a performance problem if providing an escape hatch of explicit non initialization (int var = void;) when required.
